Reign of Kings is an open world, first/third person, survivo-craft game. I can hear all of your moans already, and as I sat there reading through the game’s steam page my voice was among them. Over the last four-to-five years the gaming landscape has been inundated with Day Z/Minecraft clones, some of which are just a simple copy and paste of those games. And those are just the good ones. The majority are as rotten and decrepit as the inevitable zombies that these games feature.
I wasn’t expecting anything different from Reign of Kings, where you do have to scavenge for supplies and build a house to survive. However upon watching the trailer my attitude soon changed. While Kings is very alike to the many other survivo-craft games, it has several unique features which captured my attention.
On the surface the game is very familiar for veterans of the genre when you enter for the first time. You design a character, with very limited choices at the moment (the game is currently in early access) and upon completion are dumped on a forest-covered island, with only a wooden axe and a starving belly to your name. It was upon the beach, on my first every venture in Reign of kings, that I was attacked by two axed wielding, naked dwarves, who chased me deep into the dark, dank woodlands.
While the character creation is rather spare at present, you can create some horrific beasts; from eight-foot monsters with bloated bellies, to the aforementioned nude gnomes. It adds a touch of personality and uniqueness to the game which is lacking from many of its competitors, and as the game develops the diversity will only grow.
